Preface
From my most recent wedding, shot last night.
I think I should start by confirming that L.A.R. stands for: Lindsey Anamika Ramdin.
Me and my sisters all have Hindu middle names (fun fact: if you put all our initials together it spells LAR JIR EAR..now say that out loud!!). For me, they chose "Anamika", which literally means "girl with no name". When I first learned the meaning I was outraged...I mean my sisters' middle names mean things like "Goddess of the Moon".
And then I found out more about what it really means:
"In Hindu culture, it's said that a name defines the child's character -- it's face, figure, temper, morals, tastes, and profession. The name "Anamika" or "with out name", would ensure that the child's future would be what she wanted to make it--since she was not hedged in by any preordained limitations."
After reading that, I realized that the name actually fits me quite well. I can’t really say that I set out to be a wedding photographer. It's truly something that just found me. And somewhere along the way, I built a business without ever having set out to do so.
In the last 4 years I have shot nearly 100 weddings. If someone would have asked me last week how many weddings I’ve shot I’d probably say 30. I just never felt like I was “working”. Real work was my full-time, day job. Photography had always just registered as “fun”.
Except that when we built Lumin, it felt like much more. I gained so much confidence in my work and ability to run a business. Working with Whitney this last year and a half is something that I’ll look back on and think how important of a stepping stone it was —it’s much easier to tackle the unknown when you’re with someone else. I really had no idea how to start a business, but in collaborating with Whitney, I learned how to start a business and make it thrive.
From the start, my photography journey has been evolving, and I'm so excited to see where it goes from here. I finally have time to go above and beyond for my couples. Taking a go at this full-time is a little scary, but (at the risk of sounding cheesy) this is what I was made to do.
Thank you to all of you who have supported me and encouraged me to do this thing "for real".
